1. Buddhism “The arrival of the Great Ghost of Impermanence is so unexpected that the deceased ones’ consciousnesses first roam in darkness and obscurity, unaware of offenses and blessings. For forty-nine days they are as if deluded or deaf, or as if in courts where their karmic retributions are being decided. Once judgment is fixed, rebirths are undergone according to their karma. In the time before rebirths are determined, the deceased suffer thousands of myriads of concerns. How much more is that the case for those who are to fall into the bad destinies. “Throughout forty-nine days those whose lives have ended and who have not yet been reborn will be hoping every moment that their immediate relatives will earn blessings powerful enough to rescue them. At the end of that time the deceased will undergo retribution according to their karma. If someone is an offender, he may pass through hundreds of thousands of years without even a day’s liberation. If someone’s offenses deserve Fivefold Relentless Retribution, he will fall into the great hells and undergo incessant suffering throughout hundreds of thousands of eons.” Earth Store Bodhisattva Sutra 2. Islam And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful. Saheeh International And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses. - Saheeh International (Quran7:8-9) (Think of) the Day when We will call every people with their books of deeds. Then the ones who will be given their book in their right hands will read their book (happily) and will not be wronged even to the measure of a fine thread. - Mufti Taqi Usmani (Quran17:71) And the record 'of deeds' will be laid 'open', and you will see the wicked in fear of what is 'written' in it. They will cry, "Woe to us! What kind of record is this that does not leave any sin, small or large, unlisted?" They will find whatever they did present 'before them'. And your Lord will never wrong anyone. (Quran 18:49) And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord, and the record [of deeds] will be placed, and the prophets and the witnesses will be brought, and it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged. And everyone will be paid in full for what he did - and He knows best what they do. - Mufti Taqi Usmani (Quran 39:69-70) And you will see every nation kneeling [from fear]. Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do. (Quran 45:28) This, Our record, speaks about you in truth. Indeed, We were having transcribed whatever you used to do." (Quran 45:29) You will then be set before Him, and not one of you will remain unexposed. As for him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say, 'Here, take and read my book! Indeed I knew that I shall encounter my account.' So he shall be in a life, well pleasing. In a lofty Paradise, The fruits in bunches whereof will be low and near at hand. Eat and drink at ease for that which you have sent on before you in days past! But as for him who will be given his Record in his left hand will say: "I wish that I had not been given my Record!" "And that I had never known how my Account is." "Would that it had been my end [death]." "My wealth has not availed me;" "My power [and arguments to defend myself] have gone from me!" [It will be said]: "Seize him and fetter him;" "Then throw him in the blazing Fire." "Then fasten him with a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits!" Verily, he used not to believe in Allah, the Most Great, And urged not on the feeding of al-miskin [the poor]. So no friend has he here this Day, Nor any food except filth from the washing of wounds. None will eat it except the khati'un [sinners, disbelievers, polytheists]. (Quran69:18-37) Surah at-Takwir 10. And when the pages are made public. (Quran 81:10) Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand, He surely will receive an easy reckoning, And will return to his family in joy! But whosoever is given his record behind his back, He will invoke [his] destruction, And shall enter a blazing Fire, and made to taste its burning. (Quran 84:7-12) 3. Chinese culture

I. A story about Wei Zhongda. Wei Zhongda from Song Dynasty was an official in Hanlin Academy. Once, his soul was brought to the underworld by the ghost warden. The Judge of the Underworld ordered his servant to bring the two books where Wei’s good and evil in human world were recorded. As the two books were submitted, his Books of Evil were so many that could occupy the entire yard. As for his Book of Good was as thin as a chopstick. The Judge asked for a libra to weigh. Those Books of Evil that occupied the yard turned out to be light, and the chopstick-like Book of Good was heavier. Wei asked: “I’m not even 40, how can I commit so many crimes?” The judge answered: “With only wrong thought, that’s a crime that you don’t even have to commit.” When you see a woman and think about wrong things, that’s a crime. Wei asked what the Book of Good had recorded. The judge responded: “Once, the emperor required for a great renovation on the stone bridge in Sanshan Area. You advised to the emperor to give up such a plan as it would take great properties and labor of the people. This is your draft of advice.” Wei said: “Although that was true, the emperor did not listen and continue the renovation. I didn’t achieve anything about that. How could this draft have such a great power?” The judge told him: “Although the emperor did not listen to your advice, your idea was faithful. Your purpose was to avoid laboring of people. If the emperor did listen, you would have a far greater effort! You will meet no difficulties if you are willing to bring bliss to the people! Unfortunately, your evil thoughts are too many, and so the power of good is reduced to half. It is impossible for you to be promoted to Grand Chancellor.” Later, Wei Zhongda was indeed promoted to a minister only. The position of Grand Chancellor was far away from him. Wei Zhongda’s evil was simply some ideas Rather than practical actions. Still, his blessing in life was weakened. Wei Zhongda’s good was simply words Without being heard by the emperor. Yet, his power of good surpassed the evil that occupied the entire yard! Therefore, if you truly take action of good or evil, their power can go beyond imagining. The starting point of thoughts can either be the way to disaster, or to fortune.

Taoist Depending on the severity of a person's individual offenses, the spirits of justice shortens his or her original lifespan in proportion to the level of wickedness involved. Furthermore, not only do offenders have their life shortened; various punishments such as misery, poverty, ill repute, misfortunes, illness, legal penalties and the like will be bestowed and last until death results. Also, there are various demigods and spirits such as the Hearth Spirit and Gods of the North who shadow each individual and record (impartially and without mistake) each their offenses. If a person has committed a great evil, 12 years are shaved off his lifespan while small offenses warrant only a reduction of 100 days. There are over a hundred offenses, both severe and light, that those who wish to live a long life must know.
